A rich Past

The Great Northern is a historical art-deco style venue situated in the East End of Newcastle, New South Wales. At 156 years old, the iconic hotel has long been a landmark in the East End precinct.

Built in 1863

The current Great Northern Hotel opened in February 1938. It is the third hotel of the same name to occupy the site, its predecessors having been in operation since 1863. The hotel was designed by Sydney architects Rudder and Grout and built by Kell & Rigby.

After undergoing major renovations in 2018, the venue was refurbished to it's former glory, restoring live entertainment and a good time back into the heart of the pub.

The hotel was a prominent feature of Newcastle nightlife through the twentieth century. It has been described as "once Newcastle's grandest and most luxurious hotel". Actress Susie Porter was a barmaid at the hotel while studying at university. The venue now boasts a prominent and nostalgic display of bars, dining, sporting, gaming and live entertainment.
